How to blend your septic tank lids and vents into your property

While the lids and vents of a septic system are needed for it to function, they sometimes stick out on your property. Fortunately, there are easy ways to make them blend in without losing their effectiveness. In this guide, we will explore different ways to help you blend your septic system into your property.

Important

When planning your landscape, the distance and weight limits specified by your system’s manufacturer, as well as your septic system’s accessibility for maintenance and inspections, should always be your top priority. Ensure you always keep enough space and access for a professional to perform maintenance.

  1. Build a garden

Make a landscape around your septic system by planting shrubs, flowers, and plants. Choose species for your climate that are low maintenance. Plants with dense foliage are great at hiding vents while adding a touch of beauty to your property. Why not add paths, small rock gardens, and other decorations while you’re at it?

We recommend to keep a lid’s length of distance from each lid and to make sure there is access on at least one of the four sides. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for distances and weights around your septic system.

  2. Install hedges or fencing

Placing fences or hedges around your septic system’s lids and vents can conceal them while also creating a visual barrier. You can choose from a variety of fence types, such as wood or wire mesh, or add hedges if you prefer to give a touch of green to your property.

  3. Add vent accessories to your septic system

There are different types of accessories that let you to safely cover your septic system’s vents. These accessories mimic natural materials, such as stone, which makes them great at blending in. They can also give the vent some extra utility by adding a lamp or bird bath accessory on top of it.

  4. Place some lid covers

Unlike other parts of the septic system, septic tank lids do not need ventilation. They can be covered without affecting the septic system’s functions. Adding decorative flowerpots or barrels can be a good way to keep the septic tank’s lids out of sight. However, they must still be accessible for emptying the septic tank or cleaning the pre-filter. You’ll need to remember to clear up your lids before a maintenance visit.
